What are the HESI exams?
The HESI exams are a set of standardized tests taken by nursing students throughout their education in an attempt to expose knowledge and abilities at various levels of training. There exist two major types of HESI exams:
HESI A2 is the admission assessment given to students for entrance to nursing schools, aiming to define the students’ basic knowledge and readiness concerning nursing programs. It assesses skills related to reading, grammar, math, anatomy, and biology.
HESI Exit Exam is taken closer to graduation, this exit exam predicts a student’s likelihood of passing the NCLEX-the license examination for students of Registered Nurses and Practical Nurses programs. Topics for the HESI Exit Exam range from fundamentals of nursing to selected areas of nursing, including pediatrics and critical care, and core competencies that are required in real-life nursing.
Who Takes the HESI Exam?
HESI exams are primarily taken by individuals whose interest lies in the nursing profession. The schools use these tests at the beginning of their programs, such as with the HESI A2, to determine a student’s academic readiness or near the completion of studies to measure NCLEX readiness with the HESI Exit Exam. Both the tests assist in pointing out areas in which the students may need extra help in; thus, allowing schools to provide focused resources necessary for improved learning outcomes.
Exam Structure and Topics of the HESI Exam
The structure and topics are differently developed depending on whether it is an A2 or an Exit Exam.
HESI A2
This admission examination focuses on reading, vocabulary, grammar, and fundamental mathematics, biology, chemistry, and anatomy. Some versions include a section on critical thinking to follow problem-solving skills.
HESI Exit Exam
Exit exams focus on the subjects that have been inculcated into the students’ minds since nursing school on topics such as fundamentals, client needs, safety, care management, mental health, OBGYN, Pediatrics, and community health. It will contain 75 to 150 questions presented in multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, or fill-in-the-blank formats.
Job Opportunities by the end of HESI
Passing HESI exams sets students on the path toward successful nursing careers; both academic knowledge and readiness for NCLEX are reflected in the same manner. Here are some common job roles available to nursing graduates:
- Registered Nurse: The RN works in hospitals, clinics, and community settings, providing care, administering medications, and collaborating with healthcare teams for better patient outcomes.
- Licensed Practical Nurse: This service provides LPNs with basic medical care that usually occurs in places such as long-term care, with support for RNs and doctors by performing routine patient care..
- Specialist Nurse: As RNs gain experience, they can specialize in fields such as emergency, neonatal, or intensive care, and thus focus their attention on specific patient needs..
- Public Health Nurse: This may include working with communities for healthy practices and prevention by nurses, sometimes in government agencies or non-profit organizations..
